Description

Decaf Espresso is roasted slightly darker than our other decaf coffees giving it a SLIGHTLY smokier flavor. Though intended for use in an espresso machine, this 100% chemical free coffee is an excellent blend for slow brewing in a filter-drip device or a French press, especially for decaf lovers looking for a slightly darker roasted coffee. This Espresso blend consists of soft Indonesian and South American beans which blend perfectly to create a hearty earthy flavor with subtle nuances of leather, tobacco, and herbal aromas, a rich syrupy body with a heavy mouth feel, low acidity and a subtly sweet finish. While not overly aggressive in milk, the blend will cut through enough to make itself known, and is also extremely enjoyable as a straight shot of espresso.

Here at Corsair Coffee we only use Swiss Water Process™ coffees which is a certified organic, chemical-free method used for decaffeinating coffee. Green coffee is first soaked in water to release flavors and solubles that also contain caffeine. This liquid is then passed through a series of carbon filters, which work to filter out caffeine. The coffee is then "recharged" with this flavorful liquid and dried for market.

Coffee and Caffeine

Caffeine is a natural occurring substance that is present in the leaves, seeds and fruits of more than sixty different plant species worldwide. Many food and beverage products made from these plants inherently contain varying amounts of caffeine. In addition, caffeine is sometimes added to processed foods and beverages during the manufacturing process to enhance flavor, or in the case of medications, to enhance efficacy.

A typical 12oz cup of caffeinated coffee contains between 120 mg to 180 mg of caffeine while a decaffeinated cup of coffee the same size has caffeine levels anywhere between 2 mg and 6 mg. The blend composition, extraction rates, water temperature, grind and roast can all minutely affect the final caffeine levels found in decaf coffee and accounts for the difference.

With respect to an espresso beverage, it should be noted that espresso has a similar caffeine content on a volume basis to brewed coffee. Therefore, decaf espresso will have only trace amounts of caffeine, similar to the caffeine content of brewed decaf.
